Friends
This tutorial was written by Pam Drake, June 2008
You are not allowed to copy or send through e-mail. However, you may print it up for your own personal use.
This tutorial has been created from my own ideas. Resemblance to any other tutorial is purely coincidental.
Supplies Needed
- PSP--this tutorial was written using PSP X2.
- Adjustments for earlier versions in green
- Animation Shop
- Plugin: Penta/Color Dot found here
- Font: A&S Popcorn which can be purchased here or any other fat font.
- Image: your choice. I used a pcCrafter image by Laurie Furnell in her Doodleheart Friends Creatable pack
- Brush: pd_FriendsJoy here
Notes
All settings remain the same unless othewise noted.
I will refer to the image you're creating as your "canvas"
Copy (or move) both brush files to your brushes folder.
Open your selected image.
Duplicate by pressing Shift + D to and close the original.
On the Tools toolbar, click on the eyedropper tool and hover over your image.
Left-click your mouse to select a color to fill your Foreground/Stroke color in your Materials palette.
Set your Background/Fill to black.
1. Open a new image by going to File>New
Units: Pixels, Width: 400, Height: 400, Raster Background selected, Color depth: RGB - 8 bits/channel, Color: White, Transparent not checked
Earlier versions psp: Color Depth: 16 Millions Colors (24 bit)
Click "OK"
2. Click on the title bar of your tube image to make it active.
You want your tubed image to be about (or no more than) 2/3 the total height of the canvas.
Resize, if necessary by going to Image>Resize
From the Layers palette, left-click and drag the image to your new canvas.
Close the original.
3. On the Layers palette, double-click the new layer and rename it "main image"
Still on the Layers palette, right-click on the "main image" layer and select "Duplicate"
4. Still on the Layers palette, left-click on the original "main image" layer, to make it the active layer.
Image>Resize
Under Pixel Dimensions, select Percent, Width: 115, Height: 115 Advanced Settings checked, Resample using: Smart size, Lock aspect ratio checked, Resize all layers NOT checked
Click "OK"
5. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Move tool.
On your canvas, left-click and move the lower "main image" so the bottoms of the original and the duplicate images are close to lining up.
Reference tag above if needed.
On the Layers palette, link these two layers together by left-clicking once on the link toggle for each of the two layers.
Continue to adjust the positioning of the two layers (only if needed).
6. On the Layers palette, left-click on the original "main image" layer
Click on the Lock Transparency button.
On the Tools toolbar, click on the Flood Fill tool.
Set the Tool Options palette to the following:
Match Mode: None, Use all layers not checked, Blend Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100
On your canvas, right-click to fill with the background color (black)
Go to Effects>Penta>Color Dot
Value: 255, Distance: 2, all other settings at 255
Click "OK"
7. On the Layers palette, left-click on the Background layer.
On your canvas, right-click to fill the background layer with black.
Go to Effects>Penta>Color Dot
All settings remain the same except the Distance is set to "5"
Click "OK"
Go to Image>Negative Image
Early versions of PSP...
Adjust>Color Balance>Negative Image
8. On the Layers palette, right-click on the "Copy of main image" layer and select "New Raster Layer"
Title the new layer "Border"
Click "OK"
9. On the Materials palette, right-click on the Background/fill color and select white
Selections>Select All
On your canvas right-click to fill the new layer with white.
Selections>Modify>Contract
Number of pixels: 2
Click "OK"
On your canvas left-click to fill the layer with your foreground color.
Selections>Modify>Contract
Number of pixels: 12
Click "OK"
On your canvas right-click to fill the layer with white.
Selections>Modify>Contract
Number of pixels: 2
Click "OK"
On your keyboard press the Delete key
Selections/Select None
10. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Magic Wand tool
Set the tool options to the following:
Mode: Add, Match Mode: RGB Value, Tolerance: 0, Use all layers not checked, Contiguous checked, Feather: 0, Anti-alias not checked.
On your canvas, left-click once in your colored border area to select.
Selections>Load Save Selections>Save Selection to Alpha Channel
Leave it titled Selection #1
Click "Save"
Selections/Select None
11. On the Layers palette, right-click on the layer named "Border" and select "Duplicate"
Still on the Layers palette, click on the original "Border" layer.
Image>Resize
95 percent
Click on the Lock Transparency.
On the Tools toolbar, click on the Flood Fill tool.
On the Materials palette, right-click on the Background color (the white) and select black for the fill.
On your canvas, right-click to fill the bottom border layer with black.
Effects>Penta>Color Dot
Change the Distance back to "2"
Click "OK"
At this point you should have similar to this
12. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Move tool.
On your canvas, left-click and move your images up a bit to make room for your name (or other wording).
13. On the Layers palette, click on the layer titled "main image"
On the Tools toolbar, click on the Text tool
On the Materials palette, click on the double arrow between the foreground and background color swatch to switch the colors.
Right-click on the Foreground color (the black) and set it back to white.
On the tool options palette, select your font.
The following are my settings:
Font: A&S Popcorn, Size: 85, Units: Pixels, Alignment: Center, Direction: Text Flow, Anti-alias: Sharp, Stroke width: 2, Create as: Vector
Left-click on your canvas to bring up the text box.
Type in desired text and click "Apply"
Objects>Align>Horizontal Center in Canvas
14. On the Layers palette, left-click once on the new "Vector 1" layer (the actual wording on the layers palette) and rename it to "name"
Right-click on the layer and select "Convert to Raster Layer"
Doing your best to keep your wording horizontally centered re-position it on the canvas (if needed).
15. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Magic Wand tool
On the Tool Options palette change only the following: set the Tolerance to 70 (try it here first and lower the setting if needed), uncheck Contiguous, check Anti-alias
On your canvas, left-click once on the area of your wording that contains the color.
Selections>Load Save Selection>Save Selection to Alpha Channel
Leave it titled Selection #2
Click "Save"
Selections>Select None
16. On the Layers palette, right-click on the layer titled "name" and select "Duplicate"
Left-click on the original "name" layer.
Image>Resize
Increase the size by 110%
Click "OK"
17. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Move tool and position the lower name so the top of the two name layers are close.
Again, reference my tag if needed.
18. On the Layers palette, lock the transparency of the original "name" layer.
On the Materials palette, right-click on the Foreground color (white) and select black
On the Tools toolbar, click on the Flood fill tool
Selections>Select All
Canvas... left-click on your name layer to fill with black
Effects>Penta>Color Dot
All settings remain the same.
Click "OK"
Selections>Select None
19. On the Layers palette, click on the "Background" layer.
On the Tools toolbar, click on the Symmetric shape
On the Materials palette, right-click the foreground (black) and change it back to white
Set the Tool Options palette to the following:
Mode: Draw Stellated, Create on: Vector, Number of sides: 5, Radius: 38, Line Style: Solid, Width: 3
On your canvas, left-click and drag your mouse to create a few stars.
On the Tool Options toolbar, click "Apply" (the white check mark in the green circle)
20. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Pen tool.
On the Tool Options palette select Draw Lines and Polylines, Connect Segments unchecked, Create on Vector checked, Show Nodes checked, Line Style: Solid, Width: 1.5, Anti-alias checked.
On the Materials palette, right-click on the foreground color and change to black.
On your canvas left-click and press the Shift key on your keyboard as you pull out some strings to hang the stars from.
Do this for each of your stars and then click the apply button (the check mark on the Tool Options palette).
21. On the Tools toolbar, click on the Paint Brush.
On the Tool Options palette, select pd_FriendsJoy from the drop-down selection box.
On the Layers palette, right-click on "Copy of image" and select "New Raster Layer"
Name the new layer "brush" or just click "OK"
Left-click on your canvas to apply the brush.
22. On the Layers palette, click on the "Copy of main image" layer
Selections>Select All
Selections>Float
Selections>Defloat
Selections>Modify>Expand
Number of pixels: 2
Click "OK"
On the Layers palette, right-click on "Copy of name" and select "New Raster Layer"
Click "OK"
On the Tools toolbar, select the Flood Fill tool
On the Materials palette, right-click the foreground color and select white
On your canvas, left-click to fill the selection.
Selections>Select None
On the Layers palette, left-click and drag this new layer under the layer titled "name"
23. On the Layers palette, right-click on "Copy of name" and select "Duplicate"
Repeat for a total of three name layers.
For each of the three name layers, right-click and select "Rename"
Rename the name layers "Name 1", "Name 2", "Name 3"
24. On the Layers palette, right-click on "Copy or border" and select "Duplicate"
Repeat for a total of three border layers.
Rename the border layers "border 1", "border 2", "border 3"
25. Selections>Load/Save Selections>Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click "Load"
Selections>Load/Save Selections>Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Under "Operation" click "Add to current selection"
Click the downward-facing arrow and select "Selection #2"
Click "Load"
26. Layers palette--click on "border 3"
27. From the Menu bar--Adjust>Add Remove Noise>Add Noise
Select Uniform, Check Monochrome, Noise: 30
Click "OK"
28. Adjust>Add Remove Noise>Salt and Pepper Filter
Speck size: 3, Sensitivity to specks: 2, "Include all lower speck sizes" and "Aggressive action" both checked
Click "OK"
Edit>Repeat Salt and Pepper
Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen
29. Repeat steps 29 and 30 for the following layers: border 2 border 1 name 3 name 2 name 1
30. Selections>Select None
31. On the layers palette, click on the top layer
Add a new layer for any needed copyright information
32. Add another new layer and add your watermark.
Animation
Now is the time to open Animation Shop
33. On the Layers palette, close off "border 3" "border 2" "name 3" "name2"
Do this by clicking on the eye next to the layers
Edit>Copy Special>Copy Merged
Earlier versions: Edit>Copy>Copy Merged or Edit>Copy Merged
34. In Animation Shop go to Edit>Paste As New Animation
35. PSP...
Close "border 1" and open "border 2"
Close "name 1" and open "name 2"
Edit>Copy Special>Copy Merged
Earlier versions: Edit>Copy>Copy Merged or Edit>Copy Merged
36. AS...
Edit>Paste After Current Frame
37. PSP...
Close "border 2" and open "border 3"
Close "name2" and open "name 3"
Edit>Copy Special>Copy Merged
Earlier versions: Edit>Copy>Copy Merged or Edit>Copy Merged

Edit>Paste After Current Frame
39. Edit>Save
Give your file a unique name and let it run through the animation wizard.
